What I use

  • Last updated:

Inspired by uses.tech, here's what I use in my daily work. I'm sure it's not totally outdated by the time I stop writing, right? …right?

Editor and terminal

I've switched to zed.dev as my primary editor for a while now. I'm too lazy to change the default git commit editor, so VSCode pops up occasionally, but the daily driver is zed.

The terminal is iterm2, with everything set to default. The shell is zsh, with starship.rs providing information about the current git branch, and node/ruby/rust versions used in the current directory. I opted out of oh my zsh for this new laptop, because I only used 1% of the features, and it had new updates almost daily.

Desktop apps

For window management, I use rectangle, and I can't live without it anymore, especially on a wide-screen desktop.

My daily-driver browser is Arc; I love the tab bar and its workspace features, where I can put everything work-related into one space and personal things in another. When I'm planning a trip or something else, it gets its own space to collect places to go or things to do.

1Password keeps my passwords safe, my company uses it, and you get a free personal account, which is nice.

Most of my content is either written in IA Writer or on Grammarly these days, and flowcharts are made with the excellent monodraw.

Desk setup

Earlier this year I got a new standing desk, as the old Ikea one did the thing they all seem to do and it burned through the power adapter.

The new desk is a Maidesite Standing Desk S2 Pro Plus with programmable pre-sets that I cycle through during the day.

When I’m not standing, I’m sitting on a Herman Miller Mirra that’s over 10 years old already, and still working and looking like new.

On my desk I have an old radio and a 34” LG Ultrawide curved screen that has an adapter strong enough to charge the macbook through USB-C, so I can keep the Macbook adapter in my bag for when I go out.

The keyboard is a Keychron K1 with low-profile Gateron switches (red). I wanted a mechanical keyboard, but most of them are way to high for my wrists to sit comfortably, and this Keychron is low-profile enough to work for me.

It’s flanked by a Logitech MX Master 3s that I got recently.

For Zoom calls, I use a Sony WH-1000XM1, held together by electrical tape. I have a newer WH-1000XM4 but that’s paired to the TV right now, and Bluetooth is forever a nightmare.
